Day 8: GSES-in-Costa Rica

Today we had to say "adios" to Monteverde and our wonderful tica families in this charming mountain town. We boarded the bus and headed to Rincón de la Vieja, a national park known for its biodiversity and wide availability of outdoor adventures. After we descended the mountain, we arrived to the park, checked in to our rooms, and enjoyed a nice buffet lunch. Then, it was time for horseback riding and tubing down the Rio Negro! What an adventure! Our guides took good care of us, and only a few students fell out of their tubes. They said it wasn't too scary! To add to our adrenaline rush, we battled some heavy rains which just made it that much more adventurous! After our horseback and tubing adventure, we needed some relaxation. We went and rested our tired bodies in the thermal waters and some of us even painted on a detoxifying mud mask! Each of the different thermal "pools" had varying temperatures of natural spring water. Some liked their water toastier than others, but we all agreed it was a great way to end the adventure! Afterward, we showered, had dinner, and enjoyed some free time before bed. Hasta mañana!

Our day began bright and early at 7:45am. Everyone was cheerfully sharing about their families, the food, the traditional family activities in the evening and more. It is so wonderful to see the kids really feeling part of the families. Mrs. Rolke and I heard things like "my papá tica does this" or "our sister/brother likes this show or game..". The activity for today was zip lining! This was the first of two days of zip lining. This particular zipline was more of a "scenic" (albeit high!) one. Some students were even daring enough to do the Tarzan swing!! Afterward we enjoyed a delicious lunch with homemade pineapple juices. They reminded Mrs. Rolke and me of the frothy Orange Julius drinks from the mall, but the kids are way too young to know what those were! But I digress... lunch was fabulous, and students jumped right into their Spanish classes upon returning to CPI. Then...we had a special surprise at break today...Catherine's 14th birthday celeb...

Day13: GSES-in-Costa Rica

We've had so much fun learning and enjoying several famed beaches of the Guanacaste coast, but today was fulfilling in a different way. We were able to contribute to changing the lives of a single woman and her three children. Every time it rained, the water would rush in to the young mother's small home, flooding the floors. Since her floors are made of dirt, you can imagine the muddy mess this causes. So, our students descended upon her humble abode like little angels, ready and eager to get to work! And boy, was it hard, back breaking work! Their task was to build a cement border and front patio that would help seal the home and allow rain to run off rather than become trapped inside. Our intrepid travelers learned how to mix concrete, how to even the ground before the mixture can be poured, and then how to trowel it even before it sets.
