Day 5: GSES-in-Costa Rica

The day started out with well-rested and energetic students due to being able to sleep in a little later than normal. We didn't have to meet until 9am this morning, so this had elicited some "woo-hoos!" last night! Today we toured a traditional family-owned coffee, sugar, and cocoa plantation. Students learned about the entire process of identifying and picking coffee beans, roasting for each kind of coffee (ask them what it means to be a "peabody" coffee!) and then where the coffee is sent. Would you believe that Japanese and Dutch coffee drinkers are quite discerning! They learned how sugar cane is planted, then processed in to sugar. Same with cocoa plants and beans. This was indeed an educational as well as interactive tour. By that I mean we taste-tested our way through the tour! Ask the students how white chocolate is made. (Trick question warning!) After our tour, we were invited into the family's private home for a family-style lunch replete with chicken, potatoes, chayote, yucca, beans, rice, salad, homemade cheese, and homemade tortillas. Qué rico estuvo! To end the meal, students enjoyed coffee roasted right there on the plantation! (I didn't realize we had so many coffee drinkers, or maybe we've created them. Sorry, parents!) We were able to spend a little while in town before heading to afternoon classes. The students have been big patrons of the local heladería (ice cream shop). To end the day, we had a Latino dance lesson! We learned meringue, cumbia, and salsa! The kids did great and had a ton of fun!
